‚ÄčTerminal Operations team retains the KPA interdepartmental trophy

Mombasa - February 18, 2017

Terminal Operations beat Security Services 2-0 in the final of the KPA interdepartmental football tournament to be crowned the 2017 champions.

Goals by Athman Kibwana (in the 42nd minute) and Abdullahi Salim (in the 57th minute) were enough to secure victory for the Container Terminal Operations who successfully defended the trophy which they won in 2016.

The team's determination and commitment in pursuit of their fifth title of the annual tournament which was started 14 years ago was evident as they entered the final match.

Players from both sides gave their best during the mouthwatering encounter before a fully packed stadium with fans cheering their teams.

Experienced players like former Harambee Stars international Anthony Kimani, Ali Breki (Terminal Operations) and Philip Opiyo (Security Services) proved that form is temporary and class is permanent during the competition.

In the other match played earlier Marine Services beat Terminal Engineering 2-1 to claim the third position.

During the semi finals Security Services trounced Marine Services by 3-1 in post-match penalties while Terminal Operations beat Terminal Engineering 2-1.

 In the group stages Terminal Engineering topped group B with 10 points followed by Security Services with 8 points after playing four games. The other teams in the group were Conventional Engineering, Bandari College and ICD Nairobi who got 4, 3, and 3 points respectively.                                                    Terminal Operations midfielder maestro Ali Breki drives past Security Services players.

Pool A was the most competitive whereby Marine Services which comprises of Marine Engineering and Marine Operations emerged the winner followed by Terminal Operations and Conventional Operations after the three amassed 9 points each but were separated by goal difference of 12, 10 and 3 respectively. The other teams in the group were Inchcap who finished with 3 points and Administration who lost all their matches.

Anthony Kimani of Terminal Operations was named the best player of the year while Raphael Okello of Marine Services was declared the tournament's top scorer with 9 goals.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, Mr Sudi Mwasinago the General Manager Operations who represented Managing Director Mrs. Catherine Mturi-Wairi urged employees to extend to the workplace the unity displayed during the competition.

"We are here because we are one and we need to have further collaboration because unity of purpose is very important," he said.

The General Manager encouraged the maintenance of the competition saying it was promoting bonding and togetherness within the KPA family.

As from next year more games will be introduced in the competition including women soccer, volleyball, basketball and netball to accommodate the diverse interests of the workers.

The Terminal Operations team celebrate their achievement.

"We have noted that women are missing in action so we will introduce more games. We need to see netball, volleyball and even basketball," said Mr Boaz Ouko, the Head of Human Resource on behalf of the General Manager Human Resource and Administration Dr. Amani Komora.
