KPA Sports teams re-assured of support

Mombasa – March 2, 2017

 The Kenya Ports Authority has assured its sportsmen and women of continued support in as long as they uphold excellent performance.

KPA Board of Directors Chairman Major (Rtd) Marsden Madoka said the Authority spends 200 million annually towards supporting various sporting activities. He added that the expenditure indicates the Authority's commitment on promoting sports and nurturing talent.

 Speaking at the KPA headquarters during a ceremony where trophies won by the Authority's various teams were presented to him, the Board Chairman encouraged continuous investment in promoting sporting activities.

He congratulated the teams for the great achievement noting that he personally had a record in promoting sports citing his experience at the Kenya Breweries Limited and his 23 years' experience as Chairman for the Amateur Boxing Association.

"It is important to keep fit and to encourage sporting activities in our workplace since it breeds teamwork," he added.

 He commended the management for providing and maintaining sporting facilities at the Sports Club, Mbaraki and Makupa Welfare Center which besides offering recreation for employees also offer training opportunities for players' competence while encouraging healthy lifestyles.       

 The Board Chairman discouraged those participating in sports against hunger for monetary gain saying the country needs volunteers to represent it for better results.

 The Managing Director Mrs. Catherine Mturi-Wairi who was also present during the event, expressed gratitude to the teams for their exemplary performance.

 She assured the players of her support noting that the Authority takes cognizance of the social and economic importance of sports which have a positive impact on the employees' wellbeing and performance.

"For many years the Authority has been supporting and promoting various sporting activities because sports remains a very important component of the Authority's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which the community needs to feel part of," she said. 


 KPA teams have been registering sterling performance in basketball, volleyball, football, swimming among other disciplines over the years. The Ladies Basketball team for instance have emerged national and regional champions 10 times between the years 2000 and 2015.

 The team emerged 1st runners-up in the 2016 national league and won the regional championship in Dar-es-salaam. The team qualified for continental club championship games where it represented FIBA Zone V region, comprising of 10 countries.

"In addition, the team has registered impressive performances in the high caliber Continental championship that brings together National champions from various countries/Zones in Africa," said Mrs. Jayne Kamau, Head of Administration in a brief to the Chairman on KPA sports activities. 

 Mrs. Kamau praised the Men's Basketball team which was recently crowned the 2016 national league champions noting that since it qualified for top flight national premier league in 2008, the team always finishes among the medal bracket (1st position in 2014).  

  Bandari Volleyball men's team has also been recording encouraging and commendable performance in the game which over the past several years the national play-offs organised by the Kenya Volleyball Federation have been held at the KPA Makupa Welfare Center Gymnasium.
