Newly appointed KPA MD reports to office

Mombasa – May 31, 2018

The newly appointed Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Acting Managing Director Dr. Arch. Daniel Manduku reported to office on Thursday, a day after the Board announced a change at the helm of the organisation.

Dr. Manduku was appointed to perform the duties of the Managing Director on an acting capacity for a period of two months pending the Board's further direction.

Transport Principal Secretary Prof. Arch. Paul M. Maringa says the new MD has been properly briefed on his assignment.

"We have given the new MD a clear command structure of all agencies working at the Port. We expect collaboration from all the agencies involved in driving efficient services at the Port," said the PS.

The PS added that key performance indicators (KPIs) had also been set to ensure smooth evacuation of cargo by both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and trucks.

"Through the SGR which remains an efficient mode of transporting transit cargo, we are providing a real alternative just like we have done with Madaraka passenger train. We are starting the sixth train in the month of June and by December the 12th train," said Prof. Maringa.

He said based on KPA's key performance indicators, the KPA Board was expected to sign a performance contract with the Managing Director who in turn will sign it with the General Managers and other managerial staff.

The PS observed that since the Port of Mombasa receives at least 1900 containers daily with the five freight cargo trains ferrying 540 boxes to Nairobi, the rest must be released to Container Freight Stations (CFSs) immediately.

Prof. Maringa said the existing software systems including KPA's Kilindini Waterfront Automated Terminal Operations System (KWATOS), KRA's Manifest Management System (MMS) and Single Window System and SGR's Container Integrated Yard Operating System (CAYOS) have the requisite capability to bolster efficiencies both at the Port of Mombasa and at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot.

"In the next seven days, we will have a fully integrated system. In addition, we are opening up a portal at KPA that will allow all players to interface. Gates at the Port will be automated. This will eliminate the current practice of stamping forms. The automation will enable information to be available at the click of a button," he added.
