KPA basketball team outshines opponents in regional champions' opener

Kampala – October 2, 2017   

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men's basketball team who are also national league champions beat Gondar City of Ethiopia scoring 108-35 in their opening game of the FIBA Africa Zone V basketball championships that kicked off on Sunday at the MTN Lugogo basketball gymnasium Kampala, Uganda.

KPA's highest scorer was Arou Ramadhan with 18 points followed by Antony Kidongo with 17 points while Lionel Menna made 10 points to emerge Gondar City's highest scorer.

The week-long competition will be used to pick teams to represent FIBA Africa Zone Five in Africa championships later this month. Below are the teams participating in the seven -day event:

 As clearly seen in the above table, the tournament has attracted eight men's teams namely; hosts Uganda (two teams), followed by Kenya (two teams) while Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Somalia each have one team in the competition. Eritrea, Southern Sudan and Egypt who had earlier been hinted to participate had not sent their teams by the time of the draws for the competition on Saturday evening.

City Oilers from Uganda is defending the men's title, while Dockers (KPA) are all out to retain the women's trophy. KPA men under Coach Sammy Kiki are Kenya's representatives in men's competition. Together with KPA is another Kenyan team Equity which will battle it out in women's category.

Uganda is represented by City Oilers and Betway Power in men's category and KCCA and UCU in the women category. Don Bosco men and Savio women are Tanzanian representatives.

Somalia is represented by Horseed women while Hawasa City will represent Ethiopia. Patriots and APR of Rwanda are the men and women representatives respectively.

And on Monday KPA men take on Tanzanian ABC men on game 8 at 11.00 AM while KPA women tackle Uganda's UCU on game 12 at 1700Hrs.
